After running aground trying to leave harbour at low water we caught mackerel easily and anchored in the "mud hole". A new mark because fiushing had been so bad all week. We left skipper Steve smiling though by boating 4 bass to over 6lb (Tony S) 6 undulate rays to 17lb (Tony S) - one was caught by two anglers at the same time (2 hooks in its mouth!) - 1 thornback, a starry smoothound (13lb plus for Mick P) and a variety of baby tope, bream and dogfish. The sun was shining on us!

I'm sad to report that Martin Arpino has decided that he can no longer go boat fishing and has resigned as a member... see email and my response copied here.

Dear Martin,

I’m sorry and I’m sure that everyone else will be too, you’ve been good company over the years and you will be missed.

It would be nice if you could make it to one of the meetings to give a personal farewell, but in the meantime I will let everyone know.

Regards

Bill

Sadly there were no bream on the bream mark close in but when the wind eased we moved further out to the smoothie mark. Hard-back crabs did for about 30 commons and starries to 7.5 and 9 pounds resp. A few mackerel were feathered aboard and accounted for a roker of 6.6 pounds joining the party. Altogether, despite the small tide, a surprising number of fish and a very enjoyable day out. Dabhand.

Steve,

I know wrecking for Ling is on the Plymouth agenda in May.

Will we be chasing any other species and do we need to bring any bait ??

A few years ago, the Chavs (Ron, Tony, Nick and self) went out from Falmouth and orange shads worked very well for Ling.

On a different note and with the July Plymouth trip in mind, I'm in the market for a car freezer, el cheapo, of course !!!

Any advice anyone ?

Many thanks,

At long last a trip out! Very nice sunny day with a bit of a cool breeze towards sunset. We tried for rays but as expected no sign of them, not even the trawlers are finding them. But most us picked up some nice codling to 5.5lbs along with the usual suspects of LSD's and whiting. Plenty of tea though Eric's new cups do fall over very easily.

Quite a good day out, very cold wind and it was quite rough in the morning, wind dropped during the day to the extent that when we were steaming back in it was pretty much flat calm.

Jigged for Bass first whilst the flood was running, then went for Bream when the tide slacken off. When it got going again went back on the Bass.

Probably over 100 bass caught, most of which went back.

Biggest went to Shaun at just over 4 lbs

Quite a few decent Bream between 2 & 3 lbs

All my gear is back home and wouldn't be suitable for seas anyway. Could someone please tell me the basics I will need to pick up, maybe with specific brands, line weights etc. would be much appreciated. Also could anyone tell ...

Another trip with Eric on Pathfinder. Nice mid-morning start with blue skies and light breezes, went to the banks and picked up plenty of sandeels plus a few mackeral. Proceeded to the rough ground marks to fish for bass, wind increasing. Half a dozen bass to 5lb caught once the tide picked up, along with the wind speed. By mid afternoon sea very lumpy but still picking up fish. By 4.00pm swell causing too many tangles and tackle sliding all over the deck, so packed up and slowly motored back ...

Phil gave us a later start at 9 am. Contitions were very good with a smooth trip out beyond the second shipping lane. We fished hard with gill and yans, but the fish were hard to find, visiting 7 wrecks. Jan managed to catch a very nice cod and pollock, whist the rest of us picked up bits and pieces. The last wreck was the most fruitful and Phil gave us an extra half an hour, which was much appreciated. A nice trip with good company.

Just a word of advice- if you are getting a boat from the Hayling side eg Dawn Venture, you will now have to park in the Pay and Display car park @ £4 a day. The car park by the toilets belongs to the pub who have resurfaced it and put a barrier in to stop non-patrons using it.

So make sure you bring enough £1 coins and enjoy the extra 200 yard walk.

Not a bad day out. Weather was not as cold or windy as the reports had lead us to believe and the sea was not as lumpy as we had feared. Having said that we did not visit any really long distance wrecks which was probably due to the weather predictions and the wind direction (NW).

Fishing was slow in parts with slack tide being particularly thin.

Shaun had a very slow start on the first wreck we tried, but made up for it later in the day with a PB 16lb Pollock which from memory equals ...
